Overall High Score
Congrats to Clint W9AV & Quent W6RL for overall high score.

Milwaukee School of Engineering went out for the first time in too long. We got plenty of new students on the air and excited about ham radio. Ops KD9VGM, KD9LOP, KD9VVB, W9ETH, a few yet to be licensed folks as well.

Clint (W9AV) and Quent (W6RI) activated K-5643 in a tent on the bank of the Wisconsin River near Muscoda as in past years. We had three radios with one dedicated to FTx on 15m and the other two on 20m and 40m. The weather was fine except for some light rain and lots of precipitation static that made 40m nearly unusable and 20m less than ideal. Things quieted down a bit toward the end and gave us a good run on 20m SSB that put us slightly over our QSO total from last year. We also had a record number of multipliers thanks to the other participants and especially the rovers. Score breakdown: 56% 20m, 25% 40m, 19% 15m, 21% CW, 20% FTx, and 59% SSB.

My first time participating in this contest. Despite the static crashes that everyone endured, I had a lot of fun. I happened to work one DX station and a famous YouTube ham. Famous enough for me to recognize the call anyway. During my operation, I have two people come up to me and ask what I was doing and with great interest with the questions they asked. Cannot wait until next year.

Thanks for putting this event on. I had a great time roving from park to park. and the bands were packed! I did a 2-fer with K-4238 and K-4249, but I only counted K-4249 per the rules.

A pretty decent second year in WIPOTA (prev AB1YW) again activating K-1452 Governor Nelson. My setup was more timely than last year managing to make good use of the first activators P2P on 80m before the QRN got too high. Weather provided direct interference resulting in an inconvenient period of downtime for HF to wait out the rain because the park shelter with trees was occupied. Due to the 10 mile exclusion for a second park, I didn’t move parks this year (direct exclusions included Cross Plains, Waunakee Marsh, Lodi Marsh, sections of the IAT, Capital Springs, some of which are over 9 miles direct). It defintely will prevent the Dane County Rover Special of a few years ago from returning.
Made the best of a same-park activation by working some in-park VHF with the other activator. Also managed to encourage some of the local UW Madison students to get on the air for some QSOs across Lake Mendota. Unfortunately calling on VHF provided more of a distraction from HF except when waiting out the rain. Finding openings on 20m was typically difficult for the overlapping contests and other activities of the weekend while 15m didn’t result in any success until after the contest.
The addition of a QRP category is greatly appreciated! It’s my typical category of operating and it makes the batteries last longer.

Had a blast! First time activating with the WIPOTA contest. Like how it now mirrors POTA parks and logging. 40m worked better for me vs 80m for in-state parks and contacts. Had to tear down almost 2 hours early due to an inbound thunderstorm. Can’t wait to do it again next year!

Only got to operate for 3 hours due to campground obligations. The weather was excellent and the bands are good (20m great…40m ok w/ static crashes). Nuthin’ but a good time!

Although 40m was very noisy during the day we were able to make a fair number of in-state contacts. Overall, it was a very fun day and we all enjoyed participating in the event!

NN5R and K5LOL were operating multi-op 2 xmtrs at a roadside park (non-POTA) in Tx working the Tx State QSO Party and all the other parties this weekend. Thanks for the park activations!
Ron K5LOL
I had a great time and am already strategizing for next year!

I love this event. The weather was perfect and the 4 State QSO Parties made for an absolute gold mine of contacts. Surprisingly 20-meters was the money band, generating 90% of my contacts this year. Fortunately, 40-meters was short so the Wisconsin multipliers were loud, but the noise level on 40 was too high to run a pileup. With the expanded list of POTA parks this year I was hoping for more multipliers, but that didn’t seem to be the case. 80-meters was almost a total bust here. Thanks for sponsoring this annual event. I’m already looking forward to next year.
